Year 3 Curriculum

Easter Term, 2010

This term the main topic for Year 3 will be Ancient Greece. It will be incorporated into much of the Literacy work this term, with much emphasis placed on Greek myths and legends. In our History and Geography work, we will place Ancient Greece both in time and location, and then move on to examine the lifestyle of those who lived at the time. This will include work on theatre, religion, battles and, of course, the Olympic Games. Art and DT will be drawn from the topic and I think the boys will particularly enjoy creating their own mythical creature. The boys will use the internet to research the topic and also develop their word processing skills.
In the latter part of the term, we will take part in a ‘Greek Day’ (further details nearer the time!) and we hope to visit the Bristol Old Vic to participate in a ‘Gods, Greeks and Monsters’ workshop.
RE and Science will continue to be taught by Mr Thomas and Mr Morris respectively. They will be covering the Five Pillars of Islam and the Easter story in RE.  In Science, the boys will study the following topics: measuring units, forces and movement and rocks and soils.

In Music this term, we will be listening to and evaluating a variety of musical styles. In addition, each boy will have the opportunity to learn the recorder. I will teach them as a group for this half-term and, for those that are keen and making good progress,  I will offer it as a club later on. The boys who do not learn an instrument already will not be at a disadvantage as much of the playing will be done without music. That said, each child will receive a book which includes notation and they will need to bring it with them every Wednesday. If your child has a recorder at home they may prefer to learn on that. Alternatively, the school will provide sterilised recorders for them to borrow. I’d like to move the class on quickly with their recorders and would appreciate it if you could encourage them to practise regularly (5 minutes every day would be ideal).

In Games this term, the boys will have football lessons at Failand on Monday and Friday afternoons. They will need to bring shin pads along with their normal games kit. The boys will also have a swimming lesson every Thursday morning at the University Pool.
