Year 4 Curriculum
Year Four Summer Term
A big welcome back to everybody, I hope you have all had a lovely Easter break. This is my favourite term, partly because of the weather and partly because we can get our teeth into the Rainforest topic!
We will be looking at the different countries in the world where rainforests are found and discovering which birds, plants and animals are found there. Later in the term, we will be learning more about the most dangerous rainforest animals, the invertebrates! We will be looking at rainforest food webs, which will help the boys discover the importance of all living things. Our study of Rainforest people will include looking at the present day Yanomami tribe of South America and the history of the Aztecs.
After half term we will look at conservation issues, including rainforest products, disappearing rainforests and endangered species. This will culminate in a trip to The Living Rainforest on Wednesday 16th June and a class assembly on 29th June, combined with a fund raising week to raise money for The Children’s Eternal Rainforest in Costa Rica. I think it is important that, as well as informing the children of the tragedy of deforestation, we offer them the opportunity to do their bit towards alleviating the problem.
Our Art will be very much based around this topic.
Our Science topic this half term is Habitats, so we will be investigating the effect of a rainforest on the way plants grow, looking at how animals are adapted to living in hot and cold climates, using keys to identify plants and animals and looking at issues of conservation. After half term we will be looking at solids and liquids, mixing and separating, melting and freezing and physical and chemical changes.
In Literacy we will be concentrating in the early part of the term on non-fiction – report writing, explanatory text and recounts, moving towards story writing and poetry after half term. Much of it will be based on our topic work and PGL trip.
Our PGL residential visit is from Wednesday 12th to Friday 14th May in Liddington. I have ordered lovely weather and I am sure this will be a bonding and character building experience for us all!
Here’s to a happy and productive term.
