HMC Young ComposersCongratulations to James Day and Owain Park who achieved success in the HMC Young Composer Competition 2009 The competition, which was open to some 250 independent schools across the country, gave young composers the opportunity to write an Introit or Anthem for performance in Liverpool Cathedral during the HMC annual Conference in October. James composed the winning Introit while Owain was nominated as runner-up; the winning anthem was written by a pupil from Ipswich School with the runner-up in that category coming from Charterhouse. Overall, the judges reported that they found "an astonishing depth of musicianship on display.” Of the two winning entries, the judges said that these compositions "completely fulfilled the given brief and will be extremely successful in this performance context. Both demonstrate superb originality whilst sensitively addressing the given texts." Entries submitted by the runners-up were said to be “both excellent works in their own right and would be completely at home in a cathedral service." James and Owain will both receive prizes after their success. James can also look forward to hearing his composition being sung in Liverpool Cathedral in October.
