Trevor - the latest instalment
QEH boys will shortly be travelling to the USA, as part of Community Problem Solving (CmPS) which is a recent addition to Future Problem Solving for our gifted students.
They represent Great Britain at the world finals of CmPS in Indianapolis where they will wonderfully demonstrate our school motto: “While we have time, let us do good”.
Most recently, Trevor the Tortoise visited Bristol Children's Hospital on 22 May to distribute postcards and activity books, in which he stars, designed by our own Year 9 and 10s who also designed the Trevor logo.
This was part of a six-step problem solving process where boys are required to apply to a particular community issue and produce an action plan that they then carry out.
The postcards enable the children to keep in contact with family and friends while separated from them in hospital. The boys chose a tortoise because a tortoise is always at home, as he carries it on his back and we want the children in hospital to feel “at home”.
The problem the boys tackled are the effects of boredom faced by hospitalised children at Bristol Children‟s Hospital.
We were able to “adopt” Trevor thanks to a generous donation from the Jim Notley Foundation. Jim Notley is the son of an Old Boy and now a successful USA businessman.
The boys involved have researched articles, carried out surveys, interviewed and arranged meetings with hospital directors in order to secure permission for the programme and funding.
In order to supplement funding, Trevor also hosted his first cake sale on Tuesday 22 May and all cake donations were gratefully received (the lettuce muffins especially!). Any profits will go to QEH Community Problem Solving programme
