Charter Day 2011

On Friday 1st April QEH boys celebrated the 425th anniversary of the Will of John Carr, their founder, at their traditional Charter Day service in Bristol Cathedral.

It was a celebration of merchant John Carr’s Will of 1586 and the date of the actual founding of the School in 1590.

QEH boys were joined by representatives from The Red Maids’ School with which it has had close associations since its own founding, along similar lines, by John Whitson in 1634.

On display was the rarely seen 425-year-old Will of John Carr, the wonderfully illuminated1590 Charter featuring the original Bluecoat boys signed by Elizabeth I, our original patron. Also on show was the magnificent 1590 Grant of Arms.

The guest preacher was Revd Canon Douglas Holt, Director of Strategy in the Bristol diocese and the service was attended by The Lord Mayor and dignitaries of the City.

Our grateful thanks to Martin Parr, Magnum photographer, for most of the images below.
