Languages

Starting with French and Latin we give a thorough introduction to language structure, with the emphasis on enjoyment - amply shown in the annual Year 7 Latin mini-play, a highlight of our Open Mornings.

Spanish and German are introduced via a flexible options system before final choices are made for GCSE, where each boy studies at least one modern foreign language. We are aware that English is not the first language of some of our boys and they therefore can receive support in English, as required, and sit GCSE in their native tongue, be it Arabic, Polish, Cantonese or Italian.

Latin is still a popular choice at GCSE and a small number of specialists also take Ancient Greek. At A-level the classics department provides successful courses in Latin and Greek, whilst French, German and Spanish groups also have enviable success.

The study of languages is enhanced by trips to a variety of European and other destinations as well as Roman and Greek sites both at home and abroad, exchange visits, conversation with French, Spanish or German assistants and plays, including those in our own purpose-built theatre.

Participation is the key and enthusiasm is the result.
