QEH has an enviable success rate in attracting boys to those subjects perceived by the national press to be 'difficult'.

In the Sixth Form, mathematics and sciences are very popular A-level choices with the majority gaining a top grade, with a long line of successful entrants to Russell group universities and medical schools. Nearly three-quarters of all GCSE grades in mathematics and sciences are at A or A*.

From Year 9 physics, chemistry and biology are taught separately, by specialists, towards GCSE in each as a separate subject. Boys already study for the iGCSE course in mathematics and this will also be the case in science in the near future.

Boys enjoy mathematics where they are successful and to encourage this success, setting is introduced from the start of Year 7, with regular opportunities to change sets when it becomes apparent that a move will benefit the pupil. Further mathematics thrives at A-level being greatly enjoyed by the specialists. The proximity of two universities, the famous hands-on science centre 'at-Bristol' and the zoo allow frequent visits and lectures to enhance the programme.

All boys enter national competitions, the great majority winning gold, silver or bronze awards, and several progressing to the higher stages of these events.
