Catering

Our in-house catering team, QEH Catering, provides first-class meals for our boys. It provides a healthy, balanced diet each day for all of our 680 boys, as well as excellent meals before and after school and for special functions.

To ensure that all boys are catered for, there are times that you may need to discuss individual needs with us. We request you contact either the Catering Department or the School Nurse.

We are often asked about our meals. Below we have listed answers to some of your most frequently asked questions:

A healthy, balanced diet

My son has a severe allergy (to nuts/eggs/shellfish/etc.). What is your policy?

Allergies are increasingly common and it is likely that there will be pupils in our school with allergies and some may be at risk of anaphylaxis (a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction). Research has shown that 1 in 70 children is allergic to peanuts, but this figure may be as high as 1 in 50 if tree nuts are included.

At QEH we are aware of the risks associated with allergies and the potential for anaphylaxis.

How can QEH help?

We try hard to avoid common allergens. When we cannot avoid them, we identify when they are being used and clearly label these foods.

As we know, nuts are one of the most common allergens. QEH Catering does not use nuts in any of our meals. However, we cannot guarantee that ingredients purchased have not been in contact with nuts during manufacture. We also cannot monitor what snacks other pupils bring in to school.

We ask that to reduce the risk of anaphylaxis parents do not use nuts in any form if they provide cakes during cake sales.

Another common allergen is egg. This is very difficult to omit from school dinners. If your son is allergic to egg, we ask that you contact the school nurse. She will arrange a meeting with the chef to discuss possible risks such as cross contamination and menu choices.

If your son suffers from a food related allergy, please ensure that you have discussed this with the school nurse and the catering department. We also ask that you discuss the risks with your son regarding sharing snacks and cake sales, and also encourage him to ask the catering staff at any time if he is uncertain whether a meal includes certain ingredients.

My son has been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease. How will this affect him?

QEH aims to ensure that all diets are catered for. If your son has been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease, please contact the school nurse who will arrange for the catering department to supply a Coeliac-appropriate diet.

I
s your meat Halal?

Yes. All our meat is Halal approved. On the very rare occasions that we are unable to source Halal meat, we will ensure that the menu highlights this.

What sort of meals can I expect my son to have at school?

We understand the importance of a healthy, balanced diet for our growing boys. It is important that children eat properly and do plenty of exercise. We want our boys to grow up to be happy and healthy.

We are aware of the health risks associated with being either overweight or underweight.
The 'Food Wheel' shows us what constitutes a healthy, balanced diet i.e. it tells us what proportion of carbohydrate, protein, fruit etc. we require each day. This link highlights a healthy, balanced diet.

It is important that ours boys are provided with a healthy balance of:

* Carbohydrates (bread, rice, potatoes, pasta) – important sources of energy in everyday life

* Fruit and vegetables – essential sources of vitamins and minerals
* Protein (meat, fish, eggs, beans) – supports growth in our developing children and aids growth and repair of body cells
* Dairy products – a great source of calcium and protein, essential for healthy bones and teeth
* Foods high in fat and sugar – everyone deserves a little treat now and then!

Click here to view an example weekly menu at QEH . We will try to adhere to this, however there are times when we are unable to source ingredients or when other, fresher, seasonal ingredients are available, and therefore will change the menu accordingly.

My son is a vegetarian. Do you cater for this?

Yes. Each day we provide a delicious hot and cold vegetarian option.

Can my son bring in a packed lunch?

Of course. However, very few do bring in packed lunches. We believe that meal times are a great time to socialise and catch up with his peer group. Those with packed lunch may miss out on this valuable time.

If you wish for your son not to have school lunches then you must give a term's notice, in writing, to the Bursary.

And finally…

There is one other, vital ingredient of mealtimes: Manners. QEH continues to encourage and teach good manners and courtesy to others as we all agree that, “Manners Maketh Man”.
